The separation of Lord Vishnu from his consort, Goddess Lakshmi, prompted her to manifest herself as a Brahmin refugee woman and seek refuge in Mahabali's castle.

It was on the auspicious full moon day, known as Shravan Purnima, that Goddess Lakshmi, in her disguised form, ceremoniously tied a Rakhi around King Mahabali's wrist. In the ensuing days, the true identity of Goddess Lakshmi was revealed, profoundly impacting King Mahabali. Touched by the affection shown by Lord Vishnu and his divine family, King Mahabali beseeched Lord Vishnu to allow Goddess Lakshmi to accompany him to Vaikuntam.

This poignant event left an indelible mark on King Mahabali, prompting the initiation of a tradition wherein sisters are invited on Shravan Purnima to partake in the ritual of tying the sacred Raksha Bandhan thread.
